The Doses of Hope Foundation (DOH) is a non-governmental development foundation focused on structurally improving the lives of the Somali people. The organization was established in the Netherlands in November 1997 and was born out of the initiatives of a group of Somali Women in the Diaspora living in the Netherlands (now it has a mixed Board of Dutch nationals and Somali’s). In 1998 DOH incorporated an office in Somaliland which had its own board of directors. Economic development mainly through microfinance and the rehabilitation services for the disabled community, through Orthohope Rehabilitation Centre (ORC) was the two broad sustainable interventions Doses of Hope Foundation have focused on. Other initiatives to complement and strengthen the interventions have been incorporated namely: Vocational training Centre (VTC) targeting young people to learn livelihood skills and non formal education; educating the internally displaced people on HIV/AIDS/ STI prevention, and Braille teaching for the visually impaired. DOH has 10 Board members (7 in Somaliland and 3 in the Netherlands). The 2 institutions constituting DOH seek to operate separately, with Doses of Hope Foundation Netherlands acting as international liaison office and fundraising arm, while Doses of Hope in Somaliland is responsible for the implementation of the program. The Board is the highest administrative body and it is where policies are formulated and budgets and targets for the management are set, approved, and where opinions and views relating to the development of the work are shared. It is also the task of the board to monitor the foundation’s management team. |
